Before we discuss the basics on how to write and ebook, lets look at why you want to write an ebook.
In today’s electronic maze of gadgets and toys the ebook is still a popular medium for the transference of information. You are seeing bookstores and some newspaper distributors closing their doors. It’s about convenience, price, and lets face it the IPad and Kindle are kind of new toys that have taken a lot of attention away from traditional books.
Are Hardcover Books Dead?
No, I don’t think hardcover books will ever totally die, but the main stream readers and new generations do embrace ebooks more and more.
Why Write an Ebook?
Everybody has their own reasons – some people just want to try it, some people want to make money online from it and some people use writing as an outlet for expressing themselves.
Step 1 – Brainstorming
What will you write about? Who are your readers? Will it be formal or informal content? You are writing this ebook because????
May I suggest when writing your very first book choose a subject you know about. On the first draft choose three topics and just write. You can brainstorm yourself to death and end up never writing one paragraph. Start by getting into the flow of writing, putting your thoughts down on paper, in this case putting your thoughts in a word processor.
Step 2 – You Need a Title
The most important thing for an article, a website posting and your book is the TITLE.
This is the neon sign that will attract the eyes of readers, this is what gets them in the door. We have added something to help you along in the process, just Click Here to activate the screen.
Step 3 – Subtitles
If you were writing about Fixing Cars you would write subtitles for the different areas of repair.
Here are examples:
- Repairing Brakes
- Repairing Mufflers
- Repairing Tail lights
- Repairing Power Steering
For starters consider these titles as chapter titles. You can also use subtitles within chapters, it all depends on the what type of flow you are creating for the reader.
Step 4 – Adding Pictures
It always adds a little variety and color if you add pictures to your ebook.
You want the picture to compliment your content not overwhelm it. You can find pictures at I Stock or any other online picture warehouse. Again, it all depends on your content. If we revert back to the auto repair ebook chances are you will be using a lot more pictures as tutorials for repairing the various car systems. In this case your ebook will have a lot more pictorials than normal.
Step 5 – Adding Links
Many times ebooks are made as a lure, a hook to get people to come to another site.
If this is your intention then using links in your ebook is appropriate. The problem with links is they disappear, if you control the end point this won’t be a problem, but if the end point is someone elses site and they shut it down or move it, then this can be a problem.
Just be aware of this fact if you decide to use links in your ebook.
Step 6 – Content
Writing your book.
If you studied writing you already know what you are doing and you only need to know how to construct and publish your ebook, for those just starting the story is quite different.
Writing is a skill you get better at by doing. It’s developing a style, it’s learning to convey your thoughts into words, it’s truly a fascinating process in communication, and it takes time to get good at it.
I will refer you to Hubpages.com. Spend some time over there and look at the various writers of hubs, you will see some hubs where there is an abundance of misspelled words, others will have paragraphs that will run on all night and others will be an example of real good writing.
When you are looking from the outside in you can get a much better view of the good from the bad. As you consciously look at others writings and get a Writers Eye for writing you will be able to apply that same eye to your own content. It’s all about getting better with practice.
